Montane forests are ecosystems found on mountain slopes, consisting of braodleaf and coniferous forests. The alpine climate in these regions strongly affects the ecosystem because temperatures fall as elevation increases, causing the ecosystem to stratify. The climate ranges from tropical in the lower elevations to alpine in the highest elevations.

The lowland rain forest is an ecoregion, within the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests biome. The lowland forests cover an area of 428,438 square kilometers, about 57% of Borneo’s land area. The biodiversity of Borneo’s rainforests is among the richest in the world, rivalling forests of New Guinea and the Amazon. Over 15,000 plant species are known from Borneo— more than that from the whole continent of Africa. The island is widely regarded as the center of species diversity for Dipterocarpaceae and Artocarpus. The Borneo forest is estimated to be the 2nd oldest rainforest in the world, at 140million years old.

'Mangrove forests are productive wetlands that occur in coastal intertidal zones.'

Mangrove forests are productive wetlands that occur in coastal intertidal zones. A mangrove is a shrub or tree that grows mainly in coastal saline or brackish water. Mangroves grow in an equatorial climate, typically along coastlines and tidal rivers. Like reef-building corals, mangroves are ecosystem engineers – they form their own ecosystem and provide habitat for several other species. Mangrove forests also provide important nursery habitat for many species of fishes and invertebrates, including those that are commercially important fisheries species, which later move to coral reefs and other ecosystems as they mature. The forests are major blue carbon systems, storing considerable amounts of carbon in marine sediments, thus becoming important regulators of climate change.

WHO We ARE

Future Alam Borneo (FAB) are not-for-profit NGO that seeks to create opportunities, connections and platforms to showcase Borneo's environmental issues through multifaceted methods.

SEE Pocket Park

The Pocket Park takes over an old, derelict building site and injects new life into it.

The Pocket Park takes over an old, derelict building site and injects new plant and human life into it. With the help of Arkitrek, an architectural design firm, we design a park of educational plants species (in line with our Bornean forest ecosystems), play and rest areas, and a performance platform that serves as community gathering and outdoor events space.

Educational content will be scattered around the park, using personal mobile devices to connect to our database, that is our SEE website.
